Description
This milestone, located 2½ miles east-southeast of Rievaulx Village, dates from the late 19th century and was made by Mattisons of Bedale. It is constructed from cast iron and features a triangular section with a semi-circular head. The left face of the milestone displays the inscription 'Stokesley 19 miles', accompanied by an arrow, while the right face shows 'Helmsley 1 mile', also with an arrow. The sloping upper face is marked 'Helmsley RDC', and the semi-circular head bears the inscription 'North Riding of Yorkshire'. The reverse side includes the manufacturer's name.
