Description
This milestone, located approximately half a mile east of Rievaulx Village, dates from the late 19th century and was made by Mattisons of Bedale. It is constructed from cast iron and has a triangular section with a semi-circular head. The left face of the milestone features the inscription 'Stokesley 18 miles', accompanied by an arrow, while the right face displays 'Helmsley 2 miles', also with an arrow. The sloping upper face is marked 'Helmsley RDC', and the semi-circular head bears the inscription 'North Riding of Yorkshire'. The reverse side includes the manufacturer's name.
