Description
This is a milestone located three-quarters of a mile north of Rievaulx Village, dating from the late 19th century. It was made by Mattisons of Bedale and is constructed from cast iron. The milestone has a triangular section with a semi-circular head. The left face features the inscription 'Stokesley 17 miles' accompanied by an arrow, while the right face displays 'Helmsley 3 miles' with an arrow. The sloping upper face is inscribed with 'Helmsley RDC', and the semi-circular head reads 'North Riding of Yorkshire'. The reverse side includes the manufacturer's name.
