Description
Foale's Cottage is a house located in an alley running under No 18, about 20 meters east of North Street in Ashburton. It dates from the early to mid 19th century, and may be older. The building features a solid rendered ground storey and a roughcast upper storey, topped with a slated roof and a chimney on the left gable end. It is two storeys high and three windows wide, with a doorway situated between the two right-hand ground storey windows. The entrance has a plank door set in a bead-moulded frame. The cottage has three-light wood casement windows, with four panes per light on the ground storey and three panes per light on the upper storey. Some of the casements are fitted with old strap hinges. Foale's Cottage is notable for being unusually well-preserved, as houses in back alleys rarely survive in Ashburton.
