Description

No. 20 North Street is a house with a shop that dates back to the 16th century, although it was heightened and refronted in the late 19th century, with a rear wing added in the 20th century. The front wall is solid and rendered, likely made of brick, while the rear wall is constructed of stone rubble. The roof is slated, featuring two rendered chimneys on the rear wall. The front range consists of two rooms on the upper floor, each with a rear stack, which may indicate that this is a surviving part of a larger 16th-century house. The rear wing to the left is from the 20th century and may incorporate or replace an earlier structure. The building has two storeys and is two windows wide, with a 20th-century shop front and plain sash windows above.

Inside, the interior has been altered, but early fireplaces and other features are likely hidden beneath plaster. The roof has been raised and now includes kingpost-and-ridge trusses, although four early trusses remain. To the left, there are two trusses, likely from the 16th century, featuring cranked collars that are morticed and tenoned to the principals, along with threaded purlins that have pegs for the common rafters, but no ridge and no smoke blackening. To the right, there are two trusses that are probably from the late 17th or early 18th century, which are plainer and lack collars.
