Description
Ashill Cottage is a house that likely dates from the early 18th century, although much of the interior was modernized in the late 20th century. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble and has an asbestos slate roof, which was formerly thatched. The roof is half-hipped at the ends and features end stacks. The house has a single depth plan, with two rooms wide and a central passage that contains a 20th-century stair; this stair previously rose against the rear wall of the left-hand room.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay front with regular window placement. There is a central front door that is sheltered by a porch canopy supported by moulded timber brackets. The windows are two-light casements from the early 19th century, featuring small panes. The cottage is situated on a sharply sloping site, with steps at the back leading up to the rear door of the passage. It is prominently located on a corner site at Ash Hill and has group value with Ashill Farmhouse.
