Description

No 2, known as The Ring of Bells, is a public house located on the north side of Fore Street in Bishopsteignton. It dates from the early 19th century and features a whitewashed and stuccoed exterior, likely built from stone rubble, with a slate roof that has gabled ends and a left end stack with a brick chimney.

The building has a double-depth main range with a two-span roof and is two rooms wide, with the principal rooms situated at the front. An adjoining block at the right end is angled at the corner of Fore Street and Radway Hill. The exterior is two storeys high, with a symmetrical three-bay front that includes a slated verandah supported by posts, featuring solid end walls with round-headed niches, which is a local architectural characteristic. The original front door has been replaced by a 20th-century sash, with French windows featuring glazing bars and margin panes on either side. The first floor has 16-pane outer sashes, while the central window is a 12-pane sash. The adjoining block at the right end contains one 12-pane sash and a blocked window, along with a flat-roofed single-storey 20th-century addition at the front. The right side of the building, which faces Radway Hill, has 12-pane sashes.

The interior has not been inspected. In front of the building, there is a low wall with iron railings topped with fleur de lis finials, which is included in the listing. This property is similar in style to Cross Gate located to the south.
