Description
The Almshouses, built in 1861, were commissioned by the Reverend W.R. Ogle on the site of five earlier cottages. They are constructed of random rubble red sandstone with polychromatic brick dressings, and have a slate roof with deep eaves, gabled ends, crested ridge tiles, and stone stacks with brick shafts.
The building comprises a main block facing west onto Radway Hill, with shorter projections to the left and right. The centre is recessed, featuring a first-floor balcony. The projection on the right forms a crosswing, creating an approximate L-shaped plan. Later 20th-century additions are present at the rear left.
The exterior is largely intact, notable for its crank-headed windows with timber glazing bars and brick relieving arches. The symmetrical front has five bays. The outer bays project and are gabled to the front. The centre bay features a gable and curved scissor-braced bargeboards. A three-bay first-floor balcony with a slate roof and timber posts with shaped struts is positioned over the centre three bays. A crank-headed doorway is situated in the first bay from the right; a similar doorway is blocked in the first bay from the left, while another doorway is located in the return of the left end bay. The right return has a gabled dormer with a crank-headed three-light window, with matching windows below and two small arched one-light windows to the left of the projecting stone stack. The rear elevation is rendered and incorporates 20th-century additions. A stone rubble wall in front of the almshouses is also part of the listed structure.
The almshouses represent an unspoiled example of their type, situated on a corner site.
