Description
Poads Trust Almshouses are early 19th-century almshouses that were restored and extended at the rear in the 1960s. They are constructed of rubblestone, with some slate hung and rendered sections at the rear. The building features a slate roof with a gable end on the north side and a hipped end on the northeast, along with rendered rear axial stacks. Originally designed as one room deep, the almshouses were extended to the rear in the 1960s and are arranged in two rows that meet at an acute angle on a corner site. The structure is two storeys high with a regular seven-window front facing west. The left side has three houses that sit at a slightly higher level than the others. The ground floor includes five 2-light 19th-century casements with triangular heads and three triangular-headed doorways with recessed plank doors. The upper level features five more 2-light casements with triangular heads. On the right side, in the lower range, the window openings have been altered with 20th-century casements. The corner section is partly slate hung and includes a small slate hung lean-to porch. The southeast range is also two storeys high and has a six-window front, with granite arches over the ground floor openings on the left. There is an entrance near the centre that is partly blocked, which may have originally been a wider cart entrance. Additionally, there are two cottages on the right that were added around the mid-19th century, marked by a straight joint.
