Description

Little Coldrenick is a farmhouse, now a house, likely dating from the mid to late 17th century. A further wing was added in the later 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries, and further changes in the 20th century. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble, with the front rendered. It has a slate roof with ridge tiles, a hipped roof over the main range, end stacks to the right and to the front right wing, and a rear slope of asbestos slate. A brick stack rises from the main roof slope, originating from the rear lateral stack.

The original layout consisted of two rooms with a central passage; one room was the kitchen, heated by an end stack, and the other was heated by a rear lateral stack. There was an unheated room at the end left, used as a stable with a loft above, and possibly an unheated inner room. The wing projecting to the front right has a single-room plan and a stack at its front gable end. A rear outshut is located behind the room to the right. The house was formerly divided into two cottages but is now a single dwelling.

The front elevation features a plain door with a slate hood, a 20th-century 2-light casement to the right, and an 18th-century 2-light 6-pane casement to the left. Three similar 2-light casements are at the first floor, all with L hinges. The left end bay has a plain door to the stable, and an external stone stair leads to a loft door. The front right wing has a rendered inner side, a splayed corner, and an end stack with a curved oven at its base. The right side of the wing incorporates a 20th-century 3-light casement with a timber lintel, formerly a door; at the first floor is a 2-light casement with four panes and L hinges, and a 20th-century single light to the right. The right end of the main range has rendered sections with a remaining dripstone from a former first-floor window. A single-storey lean-to, with a corrugated iron roof, is situated in the angle between the wing and the main range. The rear of the house features a single-storey outshut with a 4-pane sash window, a door, and an 8-pane casement.

Inside, the passage contains a straight staircase. The room to the left has a re-used 18th-century 10-panelled fielded door, possibly from the original Coldrenick House, and panelled shutters to the window. The room to the right has a roughly hewn and chamfered slate floor, and cross beams. It features a cambered timber lintel over the fireplace, chamfered with step stops. The room in the front wing has chamfered cross beams with run-out stops.
