Description

This is an early 19th-century house with associated garden walls, railings, and a gate. It is located on a prominent corner site in Bishopsteignton. The house is likely constructed of whitewashed and stuccoed stone, with a hipped slate roof featuring deep eaves supported by shaped brackets. Brick chimney shafts flank the ends. The plan is rectangular, double-depth, with a central passage containing the staircase and principal rooms facing the front, with service rooms at the rear.

The exterior is largely complete and symmetrical, with a three-bay front featuring a glazed verandah supported by timber posts. The end walls of the verandah incorporate round-headed niches, a local architectural detail. A central, half-glazed front door has arched lights, panelled reveals, and a decorative doorcase with a cornice. There are two-leaf French windows to the left and right, with glazing bars, and three first-floor windows with 12 panes, the upper panes featuring arched glazing bars. Shaped timber struts support the verandah posts. Low garden walls extend in front of the building, featuring railings with fleur de lis finials and square-section gate piers with a matching gate.

The interior, while not thoroughly inspected, likely retains a contemporary staircase and joinery, with surviving chimney pieces. The structure represents a remarkably complete example of an early 19th-century modest gentry house typical of the area.
