Description

The socket stone of a medieval preaching cross is located in the garden southwest of Cross House in Bishopsteignton. Made of granite, the socket stone features moulded corners. Originally, the complete cross is said to have stood at the entrance to Cross House. The base of the cross was repurposed as a pig trough and was rescued from the foreshore of the River Teign in 1927. It was then placed in the garden of Cross House by the owner, Mr. Duder.
