Description
This is a house, likely dating to the early 19th century, located on the north side of Fore Street, Bishopsteignton. It has been divided into flats. The exterior is whitewashed and stuccoed, with a hipped slate roof, deep eaves, and end brick chimney stacks. The building’s layout includes a main rectangular block containing the principal rooms, alongside a smaller, gabled entrance block set back on the left. An additional block adjoins at the rear left corner, connecting to Causeway Cottage (No 24).
The front of the house has three storeys and presents an asymmetrical three-bay facade, with a platband and a one-bay block set back on the left. The main block has a shallow, first-floor, three-light bow window on the right, alongside 12-pane timber sash windows to the ground and first floors on the left. A tripartite sash window, likely a late 19th- or early 20th-century replacement with glazing bars, sits on the ground floor to the right. The second floor has three eight-pane sashes. The entrance block features a 19th-century half-glazed front door with margin panes, a 12-pane sash window above it, and a two-pane sash on the second storey.
The interior has not been inspected, but an original 19th-century staircase is present to the rear of the entrance, and other early 19th-century interior features may remain. A photograph in the Bishopsteignton Museum shows a long, glazed porch to the entrance block. The house is a prominent feature of Fore Street due to its height and possesses a good frontage.
