Description

Ashlands Cottage is an 18th-century house that was altered in the late 19th century and again in 1990. It is constructed from limestone rubble and features stepped stone coping on the left gable end, along with three brick stacks—one on the left and two at the center of the slate roof. The cottage has a single-unit plan with a late 19th-century extension that serves as a right rear wing but is a separate property from Ashlands House.

The exterior is two stories high with a three-window range. The front windows, dating from around 1990, are set under gauged flat stone arches and 20th-century lintels. The rear windows are under gauged cambered arches, consisting of three-light casements with small panes on the left and late 19th-century horned 2/2-pane sashes on the right. A plain stone porch features a door from around 1990.

Inside, the left unit, which is attached to Ashlands House, has an open fireplace with a stone jamb on the right and an oak lintel that has been cut and is now supported by a brick wall on the left to provide access to the 19th-century extension at the rear. A stop-chamfered beam rests on the lintel of a 19th-century window at the back. The room above contains a 19th-century fireplace, but otherwise, the interior has been altered. There is reportedly a well located in the center, behind the original dwelling.

Additionally, there is a low Ham Hill stone wall attached to the southeast corner of the cottage, which extends to the left and fronts Ashlands House. This wall features alternating loop-and-spearhead railings with fleur-de-lys finials and a matching gate on the right.
