Description
Ashlands House is an early 19th-century house, with a rear wing dating to the late 18th century. The house now serves as offices. It is constructed of Ham Hill stone ashlar to the front facade, with coursed limestone rubble to the remainder. The roofs are slate; the rear wing has a hipped roof to the east, and a stone-coped gable end with a stone base to a rendered stack featuring a moulded cornice. The main block has stepped stone coping and brick stacks to the gable ends. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the rear wing stepped forward to the left. A late 19th-century cast-iron trellised verandah with a 20th-century glass lean-to roof covers the entrance, which is located on the right, front return of the rear wing, and runs along the south side of the later building.
The rear wing is two storeys and has a three-window range with 6/6-pane sashes facing south. The main block, facing the road to the east, also has a three-window range with 8/8-pane sashes. The central ground-floor window is distinguished by a moulded, shouldered architrave with an apron between the cill and plinth. The left return has an 8/8-pane sash above the verandah and French windows with margin-panes below. The right return has steps leading down to the basement, where a wide 17th-century door is studded vertically on the exterior and horizontally on the interior.
The entrance hall, situated at the junction of the two buildings, is on two levels, with steps leading along the length of a polychromatic tiled floor. A dogleg staircase to the right features stick balusters and a wreathed mahogany handrail. Interior features include a late 19th-century black marble fireplace in the rear wing and a white marble fireplace in the front-left room, where the reeded cornice has been embellished. There are an elliptical arch and 6-panel doors on the ground floor, and 4-panel doors on the first floor. The basement of the early 19th-century block has segmental arches to the vaults.
