Description

Ashlands Church of England School is a school building dated 1896. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, featuring rusticated bands and some blue lias and red sandstone decoration. The roof is made of slate and has obelisk finials on most gable ends. The building has a complex plan with five forward-facing gables and cross gables, designed in the Gothic Revival style.

The front elevation is single storey, while the rear rises to two storeys due to the sloping ground. On the left, there is a gabled block with a pierced cross in the apex above a rusticated semi-circular relieving arch, which has an ogee quatrefoil at the center. This is flanked by two tall rusticated pointed arches, each topped with an ogee quatrefoil above two-light stone-mullioned and transomed windows. The left return of this block features a similar gable with a central buttress between the windows.

The central front gable has smooth red and yellow sandstone arches and colonnettes on the window jambs. It is flanked by two lower stepped-forward gabled entrances, each with a door towards the center and two trefoil-headed leaded lights on the sides. The planked doors are set under segmental-pointed arches with round stops on the hoodmoulds. The far-right gable has a four-light stone-mullioned window with 20th-century louvred glazing. All three forward gables feature a rusticated band at lintel level and a platband above, with the left gable displaying the date 1896.

The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have arch-braced roofs and other original features. This building is a late example of the robust Gothic Revival style, showcasing a visually impressive and vigorous design.
