Description

No. 2 Abbey Street is a house that has been converted into two shops. It dates from the early 19th century, with later 19th-century shop fronts. The front is made of painted brick, while the right side is unpainted, and the rest of the building is constructed from limestone rubble. It features a hipped slate roof with brick stacks on the sides and rear.

The building is two storeys high with an attic and has a three-window range. The late 19th-century shop front has panelled pilasters that support heavy consoles and a plain fascia. On the first floor, there are three 6/6 pane sash windows. The right side, which faces North Street, is almost symmetrical with a four-window range and a platband at cill level. The first floor includes a tripartite sash window on the far right, a similar-sized blind window on the far left, and a 6/6-pane sash window on the inside right with another blind window on the inside left. Below the far left window, there is a large round-arch recess with a tripartite window painted as a trompe l'oeil, and a sign for North Street is fixed above it. To the inside left, there is a similar trompe l'oeil of a 6/6-pane sash. The far right features a round-arch recess with a 20th-century window below, and to the inside right, there is a set-back door with a round-arch window acting as a large fanlight. Both the front and right slopes of the roof have flat-roofed dormers.

At the rear, there is a lower two-storey extension that includes a three-light casement window on the first floor and a tripartite 6/6-pane sash window under a segmental arch on the ground floor.

In front of the building, there is approximately 1.5 meters of Ham Hill stone wall with coping, which fronts a single-storey lean-to that has a recessed round-arch doorcase with imposts and a six-panel door beneath a 20th-century fanlight.
