Description

This building, known as No. 1 Abbey Street, is a shop that dates from the mid-19th century, with a rear wing that likely dates from the 17th or 18th century. It is constructed from limestone rubble, featuring Ham Hill stone quoins and voussoirs at the front, and has a slate roof that is half-hipped at the front-right, with a brick chimney stack at the center of the ridge of the rear wing.

The building has an obtuse-angled L-shape plan and stands two storeys high. The front has a three-window range, while the rear right wing includes two storeys with an attic in a central gable and a four-window range. The facade facing Market Street to the west has late 19th-century 2/2 sash windows on the first floor, and a mid-19th-century double shopfront that is stepped forward, featuring four panes on each side beneath a simple fascia with a moulded cornice.

The long right return on Abbey Street displays three phases of construction. The side of the 19th-century shop has a two-light casement window under the eaves of the half-hipped roof. There is a gabled range from around 1700 that faces the street, with stone coping and late 19th-century 2/2 sash windows under wooden lintels on each floor, plus a smaller window in the apex. This range has a central ridge stack. The stepped-forward rear range, which may be older, runs parallel to Abbey Street and has a plain tile roof. All windows are from the 20th century, mostly casements under wooden lintels, with horizontal three-light windows on the far right.

The interior has not been inspected. The first two ranges of the right return on Abbey Street feature a narrow area enclosed by a low Ham Hill stone plinth, which is topped with spearhead railings and includes a gate at the rear.
