Description
This factory, built around the 1880s, is located to the east of No. 3 Abbey Street in Crewkerne. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with Ham Hill stone quoins and dressings, topped with a slate roof. Designed in a palazzo style, the building stands three stories tall and features a ten-window range, which is divided into five bays by pilasters that rise from a plinth through a continuous platband to an entablature. The windows are paired, with small panes at the top and larger ones below, separated by square-section mullions. Above the entablature, the attic contains 8/2 casements set in a recess with a rolled arris at the top. The first floor has tall round-arch windows with 16/6 panes above a platband, while the ground floor features similar windows but with flat arches. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the West Somerset and Devon Shirt Factory relocated from Market Street in 1875 and is marked as a shirt factory on the Ordnance Survey map of 1886.
