Description
No. 5 Abbey Street is a house and shop dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick with a stucco front, featuring a slate roof and stone stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with a four-window range. The first floor has 6/6-pane sash windows. On the ground floor, to the far right, there is a 2/2-pane tripartite sash window, and to the left of it, a six-panel door with a semi-circular fanlight that has radiating glazing bars, set within a reeded archivolt and surrounded by a moulded architrave. To the left, there is a projecting shopfront with a moulded cornice over colonnettes and a central four-panel door. The ends of the shopfront feature full-height engaged columns with rounded caps and bases similar to the colonnettes between the windows. Attached to the right side of the building is a mid-19th century shop, which is now part of it, featuring an incised stucco facade, stepped stone coping, and a rendered stack on the right gable end. This section is two storeys high with a one-window range. The first floor has a 6/6-pane sash window above a plain fascia and tall, two-light plate-glass windows; a 20th-century window has been inserted into the former door space. The interior has not been inspected. The building is included for its group value.
