Description
The Chimes is a house located on Abbey Street in Crewkerne, dating from the early to mid 19th century, with a 17th-century wing. It is constructed from rough Ham Hill stone ashlar and features stepped stone coping on a slate roof, with brick stacks at the gable ends of the main house. The building has a two-unit central-entry plan, with the 17th-century one-unit wing situated to the right. It stands two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window range. The windows have stone lintels and 8/8-pane sashes. The entrance features a six-panel door with a semi-circular overlight, set back in a round arch with a stepped architrave and reeded imposts. The right side of the house includes the lower two-storey 17th-century wing, which has a three-light mullioned window on each floor.
Inside, there is a straight-flight staircase located at the rear left, which has an open string design with stick balusters and a turned newel. The two ground-floor rooms are adorned with reeded cornices; the left room has elliptical recesses flanking a former fireplace, while the right room features a Regency-style fire surround. There are steps leading down to the 17th-century wing, which has a stone-flagged ground floor, with wall cupboards dating from around 1700 flanking a plain wooden fire surround from the early 18th century, now fitted with a 20th-century grate. The attic contains oak floorboards and pegged trenched purlins supporting the roof.
