Description
Wallis's Mill, located on Brigstock Old Dry Lane, is a factory building that has been converted into offices. It was constructed around 1873-1874 and features squared coursed limestone with a slate roof. The building has a rectangular single-depth plan and stands four storeys tall. The south-west elevation has a 13-window range, with the central three bays slightly projecting and topped with a gable. The windows are arch-headed with ashlar surrounds and keyblocks, and they include cast-iron glazing bars with centre opening lights. There is a doorway on the far right with a similar surround and a 20th-century door. The building has a chamfered plinth and ashlar quoins, along with a hipped roof. The gable includes an arch-headed niche with a bell. Each side elevation consists of two bays, while the north-east elevation at the rear mirrors the front but lacks the central gable and features a metal fire escape stair. The mill was built by Messrs. Wallis and Linnell as a clothing factory designed to maximize natural light on each floor.
