Description
This is a house, likely dating to the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed of roughcast stone rubble with a slate roof, half-hipped on the right-hand side, facing Stapledon Lane. The rear wall has two large rendered chimneys. The house appears to have two rooms arranged around a central entrance. It is positioned with its gable end facing Stapledon Lane, overlooking an alley that leads down to North Street.
The house is two storeys high with a garret. It originally had three windows, though the fenestration has changed over time. A plank door features a window cut into it, set within a bead-moulded frame. Most of the windows are small-paned wood casements. The two upper-floor windows on the right-hand side are 19th-century examples with L-hinges. To the left of the upper storey is a larger 20th-century wood casement, and above that a triangular dormer gable, which is a 20th-century addition.
The interior was not inspected, but the left-hand ground floor room appears to contain a fireplace with a chamfered spine beam with run-out stops.
The house's location is notable; it sits behind what would typically be considered a burgage plot fronting North Street.
