Description

Numbers 53 and 54 are a pair of estate cottages built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from coursed squared and dressed limestone. The cottages feature one original 19th-century stack, with two other stacks that were restored in the 20th century. The main body of the cottages has a rectangular plan and a symmetrical facade for each cottage, rising to one and a half storeys.

Each cottage has four half dormers on the first floor, which contain 2-light stone-mullioned casements. On the ground floor, there are four 2-light stone-mullioned casements with stopped hoods. Number 53 has a part-glazed door from the 20th century, while Number 54 has a plank door, also from the 20th century. Both doors are topped with flat canopies that have moulded margins and are supported by moulded brackets.

The gable-end and axial stacks are set on plinths, and there is flat coping at the gable ends and on the dormers. The interiors have not been inspected. Additionally, there are coursed squared and dressed limestone walls, approximately 2 meters in height, that run at right angles to the gable ends, linking Number 53 to Number 50 and Number 54 to the boundary wall on the north side of the street. Number 53 is owned by the National Trust.
