Description

88 Sherborne is a detached cottage built in the 19th century, featuring two reused 12th-century doorways. The structure is made of coursed squared and dressed limestone with a stone slate roof and ashlar stacks, two of which have been restored in the 20th century. The main body of the cottage is rectangular, with a later extension on the right. It has a symmetrical one-and-a-half storey facade with two windows.

The upper level includes two-light dormers that extend from the eaves to the first floor, framed by flat-chamfered surrounds. On the ground floor, there are two three-light stone-mullioned casements with stopped hoods, positioned on either side of a 19th-century plank door. This door is set within a 12th-century round-headed surround that features two orders, with an eroded chevron motif on the inner arch and a zig-zag motif on the outer arch. Engaged columns flanking the door have eroded yet decorated capitals. The tympanum above the door displays an incised cross at the center, with incised four-petal rosettes on either side.

At the rear, there is another plank door with a plain 12th-century tympanum, and a small lancet window above it with a pointed hood. The gable ends feature quatrefoils with semi-circular hoods, and there are single-storey extensions to the right that include a two-light casement. The gable ends have flat coping, and there are gable-end stacks. The 12th-century doorways are believed to have originated from a chapel that once stood in the garden of Stones Farm. The interior has not been inspected, and the property is owned by the National Trust.
