Description
Nos 78, 79, 81, 83, and 84 are former almshouses that have been divided into five separate units. They were built in the early 19th century and feature ashlar stonework with an artificial stone slate roof. The building has three 20th-century ashlar stacks and one dressed stone stack. It has a long rectangular shape with gables that project slightly forward on the north side, creating a 'U'-shaped plan.
The north front is symmetrical, showcasing a central gable that contains a 2-light casement window with a stopped hood above a wide, 4-centred arched entrance. On either side of the central gable, there are two half dormers with single-light casements set in chamfered stone surrounds. The first floor of the wings features two-light casements. To the right of the central entrance is a 20th-century part-glazed door, and a similar door is set back within an archway at the center of the facade. The left-hand gable has a plank door with a single pane. The doorways on the gables have stopped hoods, and there are 19th-century plank doors within 4-centred arched surrounds at the gable ends. The south front includes one 19th-century plank door and two 20th-century glazed or part-glazed doors. The building has gable-end and axial stacks, flat canopies at the gable ends and dormers, and moulded kneelers. The interiors have not been inspected.
