Description
Nos 125 and 126 on Turnpikegate in Higher Clovelly are a pair of cottages dating from the 18th century, with some alterations in the 19th century including changes to the windows and roof. The cottages have rubble and cob walls, a half-hipped roof covered with slates, and colourwashed walls. There is a large rendered stack from the 19th century at the ridge and a brick gable-end stack on the right.
Each cottage has a single room depth. The cottage on the right features a central entrance with heated rooms on either side, and an axial stack at the gable end. The left room has an axial stack as well, while the cottage on the left has a similar layout, though the room on the left appears to be unheated. There is also a single-storey outbuilding to the left.
The exterior of the cottages is two storeys high with three bays, featuring 19th-century two-light casement windows with 12 panes. There are two door openings: on the right, there is a plank door with a gabled latticework porch, and on the left, an early 20th-century projecting porch made of wood with a lean-to slate roof and a half-glazed door. There is a wooden outbuilding to the left. The interior was not seen.
