Description
Sandscott and Ivy Cottage are a pair of cottages dating from the early to mid-18th century, with later 19th-century additions. The walls are rendered cob, and the roof is thatched with a gable end. Two gable-end stacks are present; the left-hand stack is brick, and the right-hand stack is rendered rubble with a brick shaft projecting upwards.
The cottages were originally planned as mirror images, with a large, heated outer room serving as the entry for each cottage, and a small, unheated service room added later in the 19th century. A C19 outshut was added to each end.
The front of the cottages has a regular three-window facade. The first-floor central window is shared between the two cottages. Sandscott, on the left, has an early 19th-century horizontal sliding sash window on the first floor and a 2-light casement window from the 20th century below. It also has a single-light 20th-century casement window to the right, and half of a 19th-century 2-light casement window above. A central, open-fronted 20th-century porch provides access to a plank door. An outshut against the left-hand end has a plank door. Ivy Cottage has 2-light casement windows from the 20th century without glazing bars, and a 20th-century part-glazed porch at the centre. A small lean-to against the right-hand end features a part-glazed door.
The interior of Sandscott retains some original features, including a fireplace with a plain wooden lintel.
