Description

Corner Cottage and Hodge's Cottage are a pair of cottages located on North Road in Dolton, dating from around the mid-17th century, with early 18th-century and 20th-century additions. The cottages feature plastered cob walls and have a gable-ended thatch roof, with slate and corrugated asbestos used for the rear extensions. There is an axial brick stack and one stack at each gable end, along with a rendered rubble lateral stack with a brick shaft for the rear wing.

The cottages have a two-room plan, with Hodge's Cottage on the right being larger and having a central entrance hall, along with an early 18th-century rear kitchen wing behind the right-hand room. There is a small 18th-century extension at the left end of Corner Cottage, as well as minor rear extensions from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical four-window front, with two windows for each cottage. Corner Cottage, on the left, has early 20th-century three-light casements on the first floor and 19th-century small-paned two-light casements on the ground floor. The central entrance features an early 19th-century six-panel door. There is likely an 18th-century one-window extension at the left-hand end, which has 20th-century two-light casements. Hodge's Cottage has four windows on the ground floor, all of which are 19th-century small-paned three-light casements, except for a 20th-century two-light casement to the left of center on the ground floor. There is a blocked window opening at the center on the first floor and probably a 19th-century door with a tall recessed panel to the right of center. A wing extends behind the right-hand end of Hodge's Cottage.

Inside Hodge's Cottage, the left-hand room features chamfered and hollow step-stopped cross beams, along with an open fireplace that has a roughly chamfered wooden lintel in the rear wing. The principal rafters are either from the 18th or 19th century and are insubstantial.

These cottages maintain a very picturesque traditional appearance.
