Description

No 1 and 2 Hackwills are a pair of cottages, originally three, dated 1724, with 20th-century alterations and additions. The cottages have rendered cob walls and a gable-ended thatch roof. There is a projecting rendered rubble stack at the left gable end with a brick shaft, and an axial brick shaft on a stone base. The original plan likely consisted of three one-room cottages, each heated, but two of the left-hand cottages have been converted into one. A 19th-century rear outshut was added at the center, and a 20th-century addition was built behind the right-hand end.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical window arrangement of three to the left and two to the right. No 1 on the left features two and three-light small-paned casements; the central first-floor window is from the 19th century, while the others are from the 20th century. There is a 19th-century plank door towards the left end, flanked by slightly projecting buttresses, and above it is a small slate plaque inscribed "Thomas Hackwill and Thomazin 1724," with a carved winged angel's head above. To the right of center is a 20th-century plank door with two additional buttresses beyond it. No 2 on the right has a 19th-century three-light casement on the left of the first floor, with late 20th-century PVC replicas to the right and below. There is a 20th-century lean-to glazed porch to the right, and all first-floor windows have small thatched gables above. A 20th-century outshut is against the left gable end.

Inside, No 1 has rough insubstantial beams in the left-hand room, and the feet of straight insubstantial principal rafters are visible on the first floor.
