Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Thornes Cottages are a pair of cottages, likely originally built as one house, dating from the early 18th century with 19th-century additions. The cottages have rendered cob walls and a gable-ended thatch roof, featuring a brick axial stack and another stack at the right gable end.
The original layout is not entirely clear due to later subdivisions, but it is thought to have consisted of three rooms, with the left and right rooms being heated. Currently, No. 1 has two rooms, likely divided from one larger space, while No. 2 contains two larger rooms. A 19th-century outshut has been added behind No. 1.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front, arranged as 1:2, with No. 1 on the left. The windows are 19th-century small-paned two-light casements, featuring eyebrows in thatch above the first-floor windows, which are adorned with decorative barge-boards and pendant finials from the 19th century. No. 2, on the right, includes a 20th-century glazed porch or conservatory positioned to the right of centre, with a part-glazed 19th-century door behind it and adjoining French windows. A 20th-century door is located in the left gable end of No. 1, which also has a thatch roof outshut behind it.
At the time of the survey, only the interior of No. 1 was accessible, and it showed no original internal features, although there may be some concealed within; No. 2 may contain more original elements.
