Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Sands Road are a pair of cottages, possibly originally built as one house, dating from the 18th century. They are constructed of rendered stone rubble and feature a thatched roof with gabled ends. The gable end stacks are made of rendered stone rubble and have slate weathering, with the left-hand (east) stack showing set-offs.
The cottages have a two-room plan, with each room heated by a gable end stack and front doorways that provide direct access into the rooms. If they were originally one house, the doorway would likely have been centrally located, leading into a central cross or through passage.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a slightly asymmetrical two-window north front. The windows are small 20th-century two-light casements without glazing bars and feature slate sills; the left-hand ground floor window has a concrete sill. The doorways are positioned to the left and right of centre; the right-hand doorway (No. 2) has a 19th-century glazed and panelled door, while the left-hand doorway (No. 1) has a 20th-century glazed door. The rear elevation has not been inspected.
The interior of No. 1 was inspected, revealing that the ceiling beams have been replaced with later joists. The roof space was not inspected, but the feet of straight principals were visible in the first-floor rooms.
