Description
Nos. 4 and 6 East Street are a pair of cottages that were originally one house, dating from the early 17th century and altered in the late 18th century. They feature coursed rubble stone walls and stone slate roofs, with stone stacks at both ends and one near the center. The original house has a three-room and cross-passage layout and is one storey with an attic.
No. 4 has a ledged door with a small glass panel, while No. 6 has a ledged door beneath a lead-covered pentice hood supported by wooden brackets. The ground floor of the entire block includes three casement windows with horizontal glazing bars. In the attic, there are three hipped dormers, two of which have casements with glazing bars, and one with a 20th-century metal casement.
There is a rear wing built in matching construction and a lean-to at the right end, also matching. Inside, some ceiling beams are exposed, and other early features likely remain beneath later plaster. This property is managed by the National Trust.
