Description

Boar Mill is a house with an attached former watermill, built in the 18th century for the mill and late 18th to early 19th century for the house. The structure features rubble stone walls, with roofs that are partly stone slate and partly tiled, along with stone eaves courses. It has two brick stacks and one stone stack, and the plan is irregular and L-shaped.

On the left end, there is a single-storey range that was formerly used as stables, featuring a stone slate roof. It has a ledged door in a reduced opening and two 20th-century casements with lead lights. To the right is the former bakery house, which has two storeys and a tiled roof. It includes a battened door beneath a segmental brick arch, with two 20th-century casements with lead lights on the ground floor under similar arches, and two similar windows with fanlights on the first floor, though without arches. There is a large bake oven in the ground floor room.

Next to the bakery is the former mill house, which has a stone slate roof and is two storeys tall. It features a battened door, one 20th-century casement with lead lights on the ground floor, and one similar window with a fanlight on the first floor. The mill itself projects as a gabled wing, with two storeys and an attic. In the angle between the mill and the house, there is a shuttered window set diagonally under a stone slate pentice roof. The left flank wall of the mill has a stable door on the ground floor and a loft door above it. The end gable wall contains a small blocked window in the attic.

At the rear, there are various lean-tos, including a large bake oven behind the house. The mill machinery is largely intact, and there are sluices located to the east of the mill. This picturesque group of buildings is situated at the base of the Castle mound.
