Description

The Royal Oak Inn is a 17th-century inn that has been heavily remodeled in the early to mid-19th century, with further alterations and additions made in the 20th century. It features plastered rubble and cob walls, topped by a gable-ended slate roof with two brick gable-end stacks. The original layout is not entirely clear, but it likely consisted of a two-room plan with two gable-end fireplaces and possibly a central passage.

The exterior is two storeys high and presents a symmetrical three-window front, showcasing early to mid-19th century tripartite sash windows with 15 panes, while the first-floor window has 9 panes and is set within a central slightly projecting gabled porch. The outer first-floor windows are adorned with arched hoodmoulds that have decorative stops. A 20th-century single-storey porch has been added in front of the original two-storey porch. The building also features rusticated quoins and decorative 19th-century bargeboards.

Inside, the inn has been significantly altered in the 20th century, but it retains a fireplace with a 17th-century chamfered wooden lintel in the left-hand room.
