Description

Haircut Cottage and Atkins are a pair of cottages located on the south side of Fore Street in Dolton, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with a later 18th-century addition. The cottages feature rendered cob walls and a gable-ended thatch roof, with slate covering the front wing. There are three brick stacks: one axial and one at each gable end, along with a rendered lateral stack for the wing.

Haircut Cottage has a three-room plan, but the thick wall between the central and left-hand rooms suggests that the left room may be an addition, likely the later 18th-century wing at the front of the right-hand room. Atkins Cottage has a two-room plan, with the right-hand room being heated.

The exterior of the cottages is two storeys high. Haircut Cottage has an asymmetrical front with one window above and three windows on the ground floor. There are two late 20th-century two-light casements on the ground floor, with bow windows to their left and an earlier 20th-century single light above. The projecting wing to the right features a 20th-century plank door on its inner face. Atkins Cottage has a one-window front with an early 20th-century three-light casement on the right side of each floor and a 19th-century panelled door to the left of centre.

Inside Atkins Cottage, there is a blocked fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel. The listing also includes low 19th-century iron railings in front of Atkins Cottage.
