Description

Hillside and Higher Court is a pair of cottages located in Iddesleigh, originally likely a single house that was extended and divided. They date from the early to mid-17th century and were altered in the later 19th or early 20th century. The cottages have rendered cob walls and a gable-ended thatch roof, featuring two brick gable end stacks and a projecting rendered rubble front lateral stack with a brick shaft. The original plan was probably a three-room-and-through-passage layout, although the exact position of the passage and lower room is unclear, and the house may have been extended at one end. The hall is heated by the front lateral stack. At the lower end of the hall, the structure was divided into two cottages, likely during the later 19th or early 20th century.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front, featuring two windows for each cottage, which are 20th-century 2-, 3-, and 4-light casements. Each cottage has a central plank door, and there is a semi-circular oven projection at the left-hand end. Inside, the left-hand cottage has a chamfered cross beam, and the feet of the straight principals are visible on the first floor, providing access to the roof space. The right-hand cottage features a stone roll-moulded fireplace at the gable end, while the roof trusses were replaced in the 20th century.
