Description

The Duke of York Inn is an inn dating from around the mid-17th century, with probable extensions made in the 18th century. It features rendered cob walls and a thatched roof that is hipped at the left-hand end and attached at the right-hand end. The building has two brick stacks, one axial and one located between the main range and a wing. The original layout is not entirely clear, but it is currently arranged with four rooms, a central axial stack, and a small wing behind the left-hand room. The right-hand room was originally a separate cottage and extends over a carriageway on the first floor at its right-hand end.

The exterior of the inn is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical front with seven windows, featuring 20th-century casements with one, two, three, and four lights, some of which have small panes. There is a 20th-century plank door to the right of the centre and a 19th-century six-panelled door towards the left-hand end. The right-hand end of the building has a 19th-century three-light casement on the first floor above the carriageway, with the left-hand partition being a chamfered plank and muntin screen, which may have been reused as it is incomplete. The centre of this section has a cranked head doorframe. The rear elevation includes a 19th-century outshut. Inside the inn, there is a fireplace with a wooden lintel that has part-chamfered and part-ovolo-moulded detailing.
