Description
Cordwainer's Cottage is a cottage that likely dates back to the 17th century, although no specific dateable features are visible. It has plastered cob walls and a thatched roof that is gabled at the front of the wing and at the left-hand end where it is attached to an adjoining property. There is a brick stack at the right-hand end. The building has a one-room plan with a small wing at the front of the right-hand end, the purpose of which is unclear; it may have been an extension due to space constraints or the house may have originally been larger. An outbuilding wing at the rear has been converted for domestic use.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front, which includes one window in the projecting wing to the right. The windows are 20th-century two- and three-light casements, while the left-hand first-floor window is set in an 18th-century wooden frame with square section mullions. There is a 20th-century stable-type door at the centre, located behind an open-fronted lean-to porch. The inner face of the wing features a very small light on the ground floor.
Inside, there is an open fireplace with an oven at the rear, and a 20th-century replacement wooden lintel. The roof timbers are likely from the 19th century, with the feet of insubstantial principal rafters visible on the first floor, resting on the wall-plates.
