Description

Manor Cottage is a cottage, possibly a farmhouse, dating from the 17th century, with a likely 18th-century wing. It features rendered cob walls and a thatched roof that is hipped at the right end and half hipped at the front of the wing. There is a rendered rubble projecting gable stack at the left end and a rendered brick gable stack at the right end. Originally, the cottage had a two-room plan, with the larger left-hand room heated by the gable stack and the right-hand room unheated. A small wing was added, probably in the 18th century, at the front of the left-hand room, which currently contains stairs. The cottage is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical one-window front with the wing projecting from the left side. The front features late 19th-century three-light casements with glazing bars, and there is a 20th-century plank door on the inner face of the wing under a slate lean-to porch roof supported by timber posts. Above the door is a late 19th-century two-light casement. The rear has a two-window facade, with the right-hand ground floor window being a late 20th-century casement without glazing bars, while the others are similar to those at the front. Inside, the left-hand room contains one unchamfered cross beam, and an exposed wooden fireplace lintel, although the fireplace beneath it is blocked. The right-hand room has a rough axial beam. There is no access to the roof space, and no signs of the trusses on the first floor. This cottage presents an attractive traditional facade to the main street of Coffinswell.
