Description
SX 86 SW IPPLEPEN 5/117 Old Walls (formerly listed - as Fern Cottage) - II Cottage. Probably C17, extended in C18. Rendered limestone rubble walls, exposed at rear. Thatched roof hipped to left and gabled at right end. Rendered rubble projecting gable end stack at right. Originally probably 2-room plan with larger heated room to right, either central passage or direct entry. Room added at lower, left, end, probably in C18. C20 staircase inserted in middle room. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front, 1 window to first floor. 2-light casements, mainly C20, with 'leaded' panes; ground floor window left of centre is similar type possibly C18. C19 plank door at centre under C20 rendered brick open- fronted porch with leanto thatch roof. Interior : ground floor rooms have very rough, probably replacement, cross beams. There is a thick wall between the central and left-hand rooms. Roof timbers completely replaced in C20. This cottage preserves a traditional facade and may conceal early features such as the original fireplace internally.
