Description
Old Walls is a cottage that likely dates from the 17th century and was extended in the 18th century. It has rendered limestone rubble walls, which are exposed at the rear, and a thatched roof that is hipped to the left and gabled at the right end. There is a rendered rubble projecting gable end stack on the right. The original layout was probably a two-room plan with a larger heated room on the right, accessed either through a central passage or directly. An additional room was added to the lower left end, likely in the 18th century. A 20th-century staircase has been inserted in the middle room. The cottage is two storeys high and features an asymmetrical three-window front, with one window on the first floor. The windows are mainly 20th-century two-light casements with 'leaded' panes, although the ground floor window to the left of centre may be a similar type from the 18th century. There is a 19th-century plank door at the centre, which is sheltered by a 20th-century rendered brick open-fronted porch with a lean-to thatch roof. Inside, the ground floor rooms have very rough, likely replacement, cross beams, and there is a thick wall separating the central and left-hand rooms. The roof timbers were completely replaced in the 20th century. This cottage maintains a traditional facade and may hide early features, such as the original fireplace, within.
