Description

Ladybird Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the late 18th century. It features painted roughcast rendered stone rubble on the first floor and cob above. The roof is thatched, hipped at the left end with a rendered cob stack, and half-hipped at the right end. There is also a rendered brick stack serving the rear right-hand room.

The original layout consisted of two rooms and a central passage, but it has been significantly altered in the 20th century. The front doorway was blocked, and entry was moved to the right end. The left-hand passage partition was removed, and the staircase was replaced. The right-hand room was probably originally unheated, with the brick stack added in the late 19th or early 20th century, coinciding with the construction of a small kitchen outshut at the rear, which the stack now heats.

The cottage is two storeys high. The entrance at the right end has a single two-light casement window with six panes per light on each floor, located to the right of a 20th-century stone porch with a gabled roof. There is a single 12-paned sash window above a 20th-century window to the left of the former front entrance.

Inside, the interior has been entirely altered in the 20th century. The fireplace in the left-hand room features a rough chamfered timber lintel with diagonal stops. The feet of the rough roof principals suggest that the late 18th-century roof structure remains intact.
