Description
Mole Hays is a cottage dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed from painted roughcast rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatched roof featuring gable end brick stacks. The building has a two-room layout, which originally included a central passage that has since had its left-hand partition removed. The staircase is located at the rear of the right-hand room, accessible from the back of the former passage. The left-hand room contains a bread oven, indicating it was likely the original kitchen. A lean-to at the left end was converted into part of the dwelling in the 20th century.
The cottage is two storeys high and features a two-window range. The early 20th-century windows include three-light and two-light casements, with three panes per light above a gabled slate roof porch that has two-light windows on each side. There are no rear outshuts.
Inside, the cottage has been significantly altered in the 20th century. The fireplace in the left-hand room has a rough timber lintel and a bread oven. There is a 19th-century plank door at the foot of the stairs, and the roof is supported by pegged trusses with straight principals.
