Description

The Nest is a house, likely dating from the early to mid-18th century, with extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of painted rendered stone rubble and cob, with a bituminised hipped slate roof. There are rendered stacks at the left end and to the rear of the right-hand room. The original main range has a principal room on either side of a wide passage containing the staircase on the left. A wing, probably added in the 19th century and formerly used as a shop, extends from the rear right side, creating an overall L-shaped plan. An early 20th-century kitchen outshut is situated at the rear left side of the main range. From the front, the house has a two-window facade featuring 12-paned horizontal sliding sash windows. A 20th-century porch with a gabled slate roof fronts the house, having a four-panelled inner door with the upper two panels glazed. A 20th-century shop window is visible on the outer face of the rear wing. Inside, fireplaces have been concealed by 20th-century grates, and most of the 19th-century joinery remains. The building has group value, contributing to the character of its surroundings.
