Description

Glebe Cottage is a house dating to the late 17th century, likely incorporating some earlier materials. It is constructed of painted rendered stone rubble and cob, with a thatched roof featuring gable ends. Brick stacks are present at the left end and along the axial line, with the latter having a distinctive toothed capping. The house follows a three-room and lobby entry plan; the stack originally heated the hall on the left and the kitchen on the right, with an inner room at the left end. Staircases are positioned in the rear right-hand corner of the kitchen and running up the rear wall of the hall. Externally, the two-storey building has a six-window front, retaining much of its original fenestration with three 3-light casements on each floor featuring rectangular leaded panes, some containing original coloured glass. The front door is planked and has two glazed upper panels. There are no rear outshuts. The interior was largely remodelled in the 19th century and has seen few alterations since. The kitchen fireplace retains a plastered timber lintel, a bread oven, and a former copper. A 19th-century chimneypiece is in the hall fireplace. A 2-plank ledged door in the hall/inner room has a naturalistic scene painted in oils directly onto the wood, likely dating to the early 20th century. The upper storey has also remained largely unaltered. The roof structure is intact, featuring pegged A-frame trusses with lapped collars, with purlins resting on the backs of the principals. Some timbers may be reused smoke-blackened medieval timbers.
