Description

Nos. 1 and 2 The Square are two adjoining cottages located in Kings Nympton, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. They are constructed of painted roughcast rendered stone and cob, topped with a hipped thatch roof. The left end features a rendered stack, while the right end has a stack with a bread oven projection. The cottages have a plan that includes two rooms and a central staircase, with the inner rooms of each cottage being unheated. There is a 20th-century lean-to at the left end of No. 2, which has a slate roof. The exterior is two storeys high with a four-window range, and No. 2 has 20th-century fenestration and a porch with a gabled slate roof. The interior of No. 2 has been significantly altered in the 20th century, while the interior of No. 1 has not been inspected.
