Description
Bilver Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 17th century, with alterations and an extension added in the 20th century. The exterior is of rendered rubble with a gable ended slate roof. A rendered rubble gable end stack is located at the left end. Originally, it had a two-room and through-passage plan, with each room heated by a gable end stack. A newel stair was originally situated beside the stack in the right-hand room. A 20th-century leanto extension was added along the rear wall, and the passage was removed to enlarge the left-hand room. A fireplace was removed from the right-hand room to create space for a window. The front has an asymmetrical three-window arrangement; one window is on the first floor, and all are 20th-century casements with glazing bars, a two-light window to the left on the ground floor and first floor, and a single-light window to the right on the ground floor. A 20th-century plank door is located to the left of centre, set back into a wall beneath a slate porch hood. A late 20th-century single-storey extension is situated at the right end. Internally, each principal room contains a heavy cross beam with a narrow, unstopped chamfer. The left-hand room also features a half-beam with mortices for a stud partition. The wooden newel stairs, with renewed treads, are in the right-hand room. Two original 17th-century roof trusses remain, featuring curved feet, threaded purlins and collars halved onto the principals with notched dovetail joints.
