Description
The Ipplepen War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1920 by H. Read, which incorporates a medieval market cross. It was altered in the 1940s.
Constructed from granite quarried at Swell Tor, near Princetown, Devon, the memorial features a two-stepped octagonal base topped by a square, chamfered plinth, a tapering shaft, and a Latin cross. The south face of the plinth bears the inscription, "THIS ANCIENT CROSS/ WAS RESTORED TO THE PROUD MEMORY OF/ THE IPPLEPEN MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1919." Below this, the step is inscribed with the names of 23 fallen soldiers. The north face of the plinth has the text, "ALSO/ OF THE ONES WHO FELL/ IN THE SECOND GREAT WAR/ 1939 – 1945," with the names of 11 individuals inscribed on the step below. The memorial is enclosed by steel railings and stone posts.
