Description

Combe House is a large house dated 1793, featuring rendered rubble walls and three projecting gable end stacks, with two at the left end that have brick shafts. The roof is hipped and covered with slate. The house has a double depth plan, with a central stair hall and two likely larger principal rooms at the front, while service rooms are located at the rear, with the kitchen probably behind the left-hand front room. It stands three storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window facade.

The left and right-hand windows are original tripartite bows with 28-pane hornless sashes, and the ground floor windows are topped with a small dentilled cornice. In the center, there are two original 12-pane hornless sashes. The second-floor windows are smaller. The central doorway is accessed by shallow steps and features an original open pedimented porch hood supported by Doric engaged columns on either side. The original panelled door includes a fanlight above with 'cobweb' pattern glazing bars. Above the door, there is a stone plaque engraved with "This house was built by T B Studdy in the year 1793."

Under the eaves, there is a reeded cornice with intermediate recessed circles. The rear facade is also symmetrical with three windows, featuring original 15-pane tripartite windows on the left and right. The central stair window is an arched sash with Gothic tracery, with a 12-pane hornless sash above it. The interior was inaccessible at the time of the survey, but this house is noted for its high quality as a late 18th-century building that remains virtually unaltered externally and is likely to have significant interior features, particularly the staircase.
