Description

Rose Cottage is a cottage dating from around the late 17th century, although it has been significantly altered in the 20th century. The walls are rendered cob, with a hipped thatched roof. There are two rendered stacks: one brick, axial and located to the left of the centre, and another rendered, likely brick, at the rear of the right-hand side. The original layout is obscured by later changes, but it likely comprised two rooms. The right-hand room was heated by the rear stack and the left-hand room by the axial stack. A barn extension to the left has been converted in the late 20th century. Entry is likely either directly into one of the rooms or via a central passage. A 20th-century extension exists at the rear. The front has an asymmetrical, four-window facade, with five windows on the ground floor. All windows are early to mid-20th century, being 2 and 3-light casements with diamond leaded panes. A 3-light dormer window is on the left-hand side, above a 3-light window; this end of the building was formerly part of a barn. A 20th-century plank door is situated towards the right end, sheltered under a gabled thatched porch supported by timber posts. Inside, few original features remain. The right-hand room has a late 17th-century fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel, featuring run-out stops. The roof trusses are likely 18th century, with substantial straight principal rafters and lapped and pegged collars.
